‘Commendable’: WHO praises India’s prompt actions to contain coronavirus spread

New Delhi | Jagran News Desk: The World Health Organisation (WHO) has praised India’s efforts in containing the deadly coronavirus that has claimed the lives of two and affected 110 people in the country.

Speaking to Doordarshan News, WHO official Dr Poonam Khetripal said that PM Modi is himself monitoring the situation of the outbreak in the country and the government made sure that there were equipment and supplies to tackle the COVID-19 pandemic.

“India has done a very good job in containing the COVID-19 virus so far. The government started preparing for the deadly disease well in advanced. The Prime Minister, along with a group of ministers, is constantly monitoring the situation in the country,” she said, as reported by Doordarshan News.

The WHO official also requested the people to avoid spreading rumours about coronavirus, asking them to believe only information only from credible sources.

She further said that there are many simple ways like washing hands regularly, covering face with hands while coughing and avoiding crowded places to contain the spread of the COVID-19.

“I would request people not to believe rumours on coronavirus and take information about the deadly disease only from a credible source. There are many simple ways to contain the virus. People need to clean their hands regularly and avoid crowded to contain the spread,” she said.

The coronavirus has affected 110 people in India and claimed the lives of two people so far. In order to contain the spread of the virus, India has virtually quarantined itself from the rest of the world by imposing visa restrictions until April 15.

The government has also “strongly advised” people to avoid all non-essential travel abroad. It has also set up 52 centres across the country for the testing of those suspected to be infected from the deadly COVID-19 virus.

Schools and colleges across several states have also been closed to contain the spread of the virus.

Coronavirus, also known as ‘COVID-19’, originated in China’s Wuhan. The deadly disease has claimed the lives of over 6,000 people and affected more than 1,25,000 people in the world. Looking at the worsening situation, the WHO has declared the disease a ‘pandemic’ and urged countries to beef up measures to contain the spread of the virus.
